Hello Lawrence Public Schools community.

As we all prepare to come back to school Monday, I want to share an important update about the ongoing traffic restrictions on the Central Bridge (also known as the Casey Bridge).

Traffic flow across the bridge is currently reduced to one lane at the south end of the bridge – causing traffic delays in the area – as crews address the impacts of the fire which occurred there earlier this week. This is expected to be the case until further notice, and we want to encourage everyone to be prepared and have patience during our return next week.

If your child takes LPS transportation, some bus rides to and from school – particularly those which cross the river – may take longer as our transportation vendor uses alternative routes, or buses experience unavoidable traffic delays. At this time there are no changes to bus pickup/dropoff locations or schedules.

If you drive your child to school or commute to work in the area, please be aware that motorists are advised to avoid the Central Bridge area, and to leave time in their commute for potential traffic delays.

Thank you for your patience as the state and City work together to fully re-open Central Bridge, and minimize traffic impacts during that process. The LPS transportation team also continues to work closely with our vendor to monitor the situation, adjust bus routes as necessary to keep ride times as brief as possible, and provide updates when available.

We hope you have had a restful winter break, and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday.

Respectfully,
Ralph Carrero
