Massachusetts state law requires students to satisfy the requirements of the Competency Determination (CD) to graduate with a diploma from high school. In November 2024, Massachusetts voters approved Question 2, eliminating the requirement for high school students to pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) exams as a measure of Competency Determination in order to receive their diplomas. As defined by MGL C. 69 s 1D(i) the "competency determination" shall be based on the academic standards and curriculum frameworks for tenth graders and shall represent a determination that a particular student has demonstrated mastery of a common core of skills, competencies and knowledge in these areas. While the MCAS is still used to assess learning, passing the MCAS is no longer required to meet the Competency Determination (CD) for graduation.
