This policy has been updated in alignment with An Act Promoting rule of law; oversight, trust and equal constitutional treatment (“PROTECT Act”), signed into Massachusetts law in August 2026. The policy is intended to provide a clear directive on how Lawrence Public Schools will respond to potential civil law enforcement requests for information, visits to a school, or demands to take a student or family member into custody, and also to reinforce the school district’s commitment to equal access to public education for all students. This includes efforts to enforce or assist in the investigation or enforcement of any federal civil immigration law. Linked within the policy are the LPS Civil Law Enforcement Protocols, created in compliance with the PROTECT Act and associated guidance from the Massachusetts Executive Office for Education and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
